Principal Coordinator(SDG Affairs) Md. Abul Kalam Azad Inaugurates Tree Plantation Program in EZ

Principal Coordinator (SDG) of Prime Minister’s office Mr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad has inaugurated plantation of 2 million trees in Economic Zones on July 21, 2018. A colorful ceremony marking the opening of planting trees to turn economic zones into green zones has been held in Mirsarai at the China Harbor Engineering Company site on that day. The Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority, Mr. Paban Chowdhury presided over the meeting while MD of Super Petrochemical (Pvt.) Ltd., Mostafa Haidar was present as special guest.

Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed BEZA to establish economic zone taking note to the environment in a Governing Board Meeting held on last May. She said there should be enough water body as well as scope for tree plantation around economic zones. She also stressed on planting Jhau tree and creating manmade mangrove forest nearby coastal areas. In this regard a committee was formed earlier in presence of different commercial and financial institutions and entrepreneurs. To implement Prime Minister’s direction BEZA has planned to plant 2 million trees by 2025 in all EZs. Mentioning of their complete support, representatives of financial institutions said that they will use Corporate Social Responsibility fund to implement the program.

Super Petrochemical (Pvt.) Ltd. is sponsoring the tree plantation and greening program in EZs. A 3D animation video on plantation program beside road network and open spaces in Mirsarai EZ was displayed in the meeting.

In his speech Principal Coordinator (SDG)  Mr. Abul Kalam Azad said, the tree plantation program in EZ will safeguard sustainable development in EZs assuring a planned industrialization and environmental protection.

The Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority, Mr. Paban Chowdhury said, the vast land of Mirsarai and Feni EZ, which is the flagship project of BEZA, will be transformed into a green Economic Zone by the end of next year and it will then attract more investors.

High official from One Bank Limited, City Bank Limited and Eastern Bank Limited along with representatives from Ananta Apparel, BSRM and Bashundhara were present in the inaugural ceremony. Government Officials from Water Development Board, Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited, Department of Environment and Department of Public Health Engineering also attended the meeting. Children from different schools of local area participated in the plantation program in a festive manner.
